The '''Colt 1911''' is a single-action semi-automatic .45 caliber pistol designed by John Moses Browning.  Designs were finalized in the year 1911 (hence its designation) and it was immediately adopted by all branches of the United States Military as a standard sidearm, replacing the various revolvers used at the time.
