→The origin of species
Most Americans believe that God created the different species of plants and animals in six days of Creation (Genesis chapter 1). Religious faith on this is divided into Young Earth Creationism (the process started less than 10,000 years ago and took a short time) and Old Earth Creationism (the process began hundreds of millions of years ago and took millions of years).

Charles Darwin wrote The Origin of Species 1859, hoping to account for the diversity of plant and animal life with an entirely naturalistic explanation (see Theory of evolution).
