|On one hand, this movie portrays traditional marriage very positively for a post Ron Miller Disney film. Furthermore, it also had men in a positive light instead of what Disney has done since by having them be proactive instead of letting the women do everything.
On the other, you have a homosexual agenda in the famous song “Part of Your World” as co-producer and lyricist Howard Ashman had AIDS at the time, but his diagnosis wasn’t known by the public or anyone working on the film until after the 1990 Academy Awards. As for feminism, Ariel is shown to believe she knows more than her father King Triton, and certain lyrics in “Part of Your World” express that more. “Betcha on land, they understand, that they don’t reprimand their daughters. Bright young women, sick of swimming, ready to stand!” And both are portrayed as good.
