| | Not only film, but television as well has had the depiction of homosexuality increase manyfold. Programs with homosexual content are shown at hours when children may be watching and stumble upon the salacious content (in soap opera, dinnertime sitcoms, etc.). "The casting of homosexuals in various TV shows has skyrocketed. Today there are around 22 television shows on major stations with a homosexual cast member as the main character of the show." <ref>http://www.bgsu.edu/departments/tcom/faculty/ha/tcom103fall2004/gp16/gp16.pdf</ref> | | Not only film, but television as well has had the depiction of homosexuality increase manyfold. | | + | Like with movies above, the writers also tended to change an established character's sexuality as a way of tricking audiences, namely by depicting characters who from their debut were firmly established to have heterosexual leanings only to then in a much later episode and/or season be depicted as homosexual (or in some cases bisexual). This particular bit was notoriously done with Alex Danvers from ''Supergirl'' in Season 2, Willow from the fourth season of ''Buffy: The Vampire Slayer'', and Claire Bennet from Volume Four: Redemption in ''Heroes''. In some cases, it's done to acommodate the actor/actress who is homosexual by turning their character into a homosexual, such as Ellen being turned gay thanks to Ellen Degeneres coming out at the time. |
