When the movie flopped at the box office (making back only $4.9 million on its opening weekend despite a $22 million budget for the film) because of its content despite being heavily promoted by celebrities, homosexual advocates and liberal media outlets, Billy Eichner, who starred in the movie, also co-wrote the script and is himself openly homosexual and a Democrat supporter, lashed out at the public for refusing to see the movie, accusing them of "homophobia" while engaging in [[heterophobia]] himself, which only resulted in a massive social media backlash against Eichner in response.
