|This Scientologist propaganda piece failed at the box-office and is largely considered to be one of the worst movies ever made. It "won" in nine categories at the Golden Raspberry Awards (aka, the Razzie Awards), making it the most awarded film at the Razzies until ''Jack and Jill'' took its place. Furthermore, it won one-time awards for "Worst Drama of our first 25 Years" during the 2005 awards, as well as "Worst Picture of the Decade" in 2010. Lastly, the film plays into the liberal notion of personal characteristics mattering more than true merits: John Travolta is the star because of his affiliation with the "church" of Scientology.

|One of the most disgusting displays of blasphemy ever. Made by liberal atheist Paul Verhoeven, this is a film that dares to insult the sanctity of Catholic nuns by suggesting that they are lesbians and scam artists. It also insults God by portraying Jesus engaging in graphic sexual acts during a dream sequence and suggests that all Church leaders rape and have sex with women of lesser stature. Not even the Virgin Mary is safe from ridicule in this awful monstrosity, as a statue of her is carved into a sex toy and used during some of the most graphic lesbian sex scenes. It is also somewhat of a celebration of BDSM, as many of the torture scenes in the film are depicted as sexual. A horrendous film that was protested throughout the world. In the United States, the patriotic pro-family group The American TFP. It was also outright banned in Russia and Singapore.
