This verse is constantly cited in anti–soul sleep arguments to "prove" that a person faces judgment immediately after death rather than sleeping in the grave until one of the two resurrections. The problem is that [https://www.ministrymagazine.org/archive/2013/06/the-significance-of-a-comma:-an-analysis-of-luke-23:43 translators misplaced a comma to promote immediate judgment theology], as the phrase is supposed to read, "Truly I tell you today, you will be with me in paradise," rather than, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise."

Numerous verses in both the OT and NT make it abundantly clear that the dead sleep in the grave awaiting their resurrection, so if the comma in Luke 23:43 is placed before "today," then there's a fragrant contradiction. Also, what did Jesus say after his resurrection? According to [https://www.biblehub.com/john/20-17.htm John 20:17]:

{{cquote|Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”|||ESV}}

The standard spelling which places the comma in Luke 23:43 before "today," to assume that Jesus and the thief ''did'' ascend to Heaven that day, simply doesn't make sense. Why would Jesus ascend to Heaven, arrive back to his grave to be resurrected, and then say that he hasn't yet ascended to Heaven? It's clear that Jesus's message to the thief on the cross was that the ''promise was being made that day'' rather than the notion that both would go to Heaven that day. When Jesus returns soon, the thief on the cross will be resurrected from his grave and meet up with the rest of the saints in Heaven. —[[User:LT|<code><span style="background:#FF8181">'''LT'''</span></code>]] '''''[[User talk:LT|(Matthew 26:52)]]''''' Monday, 19:16, February 5, 2023 (EST)
