The standard spelling which places the comma in Luke 23:43 before "today," to assume that Jesus and the thief did ascend to Heaven that day, simply doesn't make sense. Why would Jesus ascend to Heaven, arrive back to his grave to be resurrected, and then say that he hasn't yet ascended to Heaven? It's clear that Jesus's message to the thief on the cross was that the promise was being made that day rather than the notion that both would go to Heaven that day. When Jesus returns soon, the thief on the cross will be resurrected from his grave and meet up with the rest of the saints in Heaven. —<code><span style="background:#FF8181">LT</span></code> (Matthew 26:52) Monday, 19:16, February 5, 2023 (EST)

:That is fascinating.  Of course there was no comma in the Greek, but it seems unlikely that the "today" would apply to the comment itself rather than the substance of it.  Another way out of this dilemma is to construe "paradise" as a state of mind and emotion rather than a physical heaven, in this comment.--Andy Schlafly (talk) 22:01, February 5, 2023 (EST)

::The usage of "Paradise" referred to a mental state rather than literal Heaven? Interesting analysis; I wonder if the choice of words has some relevance to Luke's perspective as a Greek Gentile. And Jesus did say in John that in Him one may find peace; the thief on the cross, despite being in physical torment as he died, repented out of faith and sought a place in Heaven, which Jesus assured. —<code><span style="background:#FF8181">LT</span></code> (Matthew 26:52) Monday, 22:14, February 5, 2023 (EST)
