A few critics have pointed out that the Vatican City has one of the highest crime rates in the world.[http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/2639777.stm] However, this may have something to do with Vatican City's population, which is much smaller than any country, at 778.

A few critics have pointed out that the Vatican City has one of the highest crime rates in the world<ref>http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/2639777.stm</ref>, but this shows a shortcoming in the way statistics are tabulated instead of a difficulty in Vatican City itself.  Crime rates are calculated based upon the total population.  With only 778 inhabitants but millions of tourists each year, the 1000 reported crimes is actually quite low.  Furthermore, there has not been a major crime in Vatican City since 1998.<ref>Ibid</ref>
