| | :The answer is that "everlasting punishment" refers to the effect. Jude 7 refers to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah as suffering the vengeance of "eternal fire." Obviously, the two cities aren't perpetually burning today, so the "eternal" in "eternal fire" in that context refers to the effect, aka destruction, as lasting literally forever and forever. If we apply this concept into Matthew 25:41, Jesus is simply stating that the resulting effect of the punishment against the devil and his angels will last forever, because the second death is permanent. —<code><span style="background:#FF8181">LT</span></code> (Matthew 26:52) Wednesday, 10:59, April 19, 2023 (EDT) | | :The answer is that "everlasting punishment" refers to the effect. | | + | First, don't you think someone like a Hitler or Stalin - who would certainly go to hell unless they repented - are more likely to repent based on actual eternal fire lasting forever rather than just a mere temporary death, as you believe? Hell exists for a reason, it is God's "nuclear option"; He has the right to threaten it and to use it, though He hopes He never has to do. The thought of hell has converted terrible sinners, and it has even produced Great Saints, who first become saved by the Grace of God, and then labor mightily to save others from falling into that eternal pit. Now, to the verses I cited, (1) just as the eternal life of the righteous lasts forever, even the eternal punishment of the wicked lasts forever. Otherwise, if one could end, the other could also. Your objection is that some verses speak of eternal punishment as "eternal death" - the meaning is, as death is painful and to be dreaded, so also hell will be eternally painful and dreadful, an eternal misery everyone should hope to be delivered from, which they can only do through Jesus Christ Our Savior. (2) second, the second verse I cited from revelation clearly speaks of conscious torment for those who take the mark of the beast. Again, the watered down view that hell is only annihilation would lead to millions taking the mark of the beast thinking all they'll undergo is a temporal death in hell. No, the Bible makes clear one should NEVER take the Mark of the Beast no matter what. And so, dear LT, there are good Biblical/theological reasons to reject the SDA view on this. Continue to pray, read and do research. God Bless. NishantXavierFor Christ the King 21:19, April 21, 2023 (EDT) |
