| | Even though many of the issues are different now than they were when Bryan was alive, I think in a lot of ways, he'd still idenify with the Democrats. His economic populism, his support for a progressive income tax, his embrace of the Social Gospel, his distaste for trickle down economics, his call for class warfare, his support for unionism, all fit him in the Democratic party, even today.--[[User:Epicurius|Steve]] 19:02, 8 June 2007 (EDT) | | Even though many of the issues are different now than they were when Bryan was alive, I think in a lot of ways, he'd still idenify with the Democrats. The way the sentence is structured, it makes it seem like he wouldn't be a Democrat today because he was an evangelical, but there are a lot of evangelical Democrats today.--[[User:Epicurius|Steve]] 13:53, 10 June 2007 (EDT) | | :And, I see my edit removing the line has been reverted. | | + | ::Without getting involved into whether or not the line belongs, I believe the choice to remove is probably due to Bryan's very strong concern that the minds of the young were being poisoned in the university system to lead them away from God. If Bryan felt that based upon the teachings of the 1920's, how would he feel today? You give many examples of things that Bryan was for, but, let's face it, they're done. There is a progressive income tax, unions exist with full striking power and have even gone way beyond to usurp monetary contributions for political campaigning, etc. I'd have to imagine that he might be more like Ronald Reagan, a Democrat who left the Democratic party when it stopped being the Democratic party.
