In 1978, Ralph Bakshi who came to fame with his animated films made for adults, became the first to adapt ''The Lord of the Rings'' for a movie. It was planned to be a two-parter, but due to a change of leadership during the production of the first film, and a very mixed reaction from audiences and critics, the second film which would have covered the second part of ''The Two Towers'' and ''The Return of the King'' was never released. However, it proved to be a heavy influence on Peter Jackson's take on the tale, and Jackson himself said it introduced him to Middle-Earth, and inspired him to read the books. Two years later, Rankin/Bass Animated Entertainment released ''The Return of the King'' as a sequel to their 1977 film, ''The Hobbit.'' However, it received heavy criticism for it's child-like tone, creative liberties that made the story hard to follow unless if you're very familiar it, and tons of characters and plotlines cut which creates plotholes such as Pippin being at Minas Tirith, Aragorn slaying Corsairs of Umbar by himself, and Sam looking for Frodo for days in the fires of Mount Doom.

Warner Bros. has held distribution rights to the three animated Middle-Earth films since 2001, and has since marketed them as a trilogy despite the major differences between Bakshi's film, and the Rankin/Bass films.
