In September 2023 [[India]] stopped issuing [[visa]]s to Canadian citizens amid an escalating dispute over the killing of a [[Sikh]] separatist on June 18, 2023 on Canadian soil. The government of India said the temporary move was due to “security threats” disrupting work at its missions in Canada. Canada’s visa services remained open in India.
Tensions flared when after Canadian [[dictator]] Justin Trudeau publicly accused India of being involved in the killing. Relations between the countries – key trade and security partners, and US allies – were at an all-time low. More migrants to Canada come from India than any other country.
