Illegal aliens are people who immigrate into a country without having proper documentation or approval by the country in question.  In the United States, many illegal aliens are Mexicans who cross the southern border illegally. Although Mexicans make up the majority of illegal aliens, there are also serious problems with foreign students who come to this country on Student Visas and stay beyond the duration of their visa. This is how one of the 9/11 terrorists entered the country.

Although Mexican nationals make up the majority of recent illegal aliens, a great number of illegal aliens are also Canadian, Australian, or British Citizens.

 

Some have cited a population in excess of 12 million foreigners without legal status in the United States (although this figure is debateable).

 

In the United States, it is illegal and punishable by the law to hire a worker without legal work authorization. Employers who break this law can face stiff fines and /or imprisonment although most conservatives would argue that the law is very infrequently enforced.
