The name "Ukraine" literally means "Borderlands".

The name "Ukraine" is of Polish origin (Pol. u kraya) literally meaning "at the side" or "borderland". No such entity or nation state is recorded to exist on any map prior to 1904. The ethnic group commonly referred to as "Ukrainian" are largely resided in the Austro-Hungarian province of Galicia, are of Russian origin, practice the Eastern Orthodox Christian faith under the Moscow Patriarchate, and developed their own dialect of the Russian language as they became detached from the main body of Russian Orthodox Christendom and lived der the domination of Roman Catholic Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and later the Roman Catholic Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Of all Russian speaking Slavs, the Galicians or "Ukrainians" as they have come to be called, are perhaps the most "Westernized" culturaly of the Russian peoples while holding to their Eastern Rite faith..
