'''North Tyneside''' is an administrative district of [[Tyne & Wear]] in north-east [[England]], on the north bank of the [[River Tyne]] east of [[Newcastle upon Tyne]]. It includes the districts of [[Wallsend]], [[North Shields]], [[Tynemouth]] and [[Whitley Bay]]. The district was estanlished in 1974 from a number of smaller authorities. It is one of the few authorities in England to be presided over by a directly-elected mayor.

The area was formerly noted for coal mining and shipbuilding. Mining ended in the late twentieth century, and the shipbuilding industry has been reduced to a small amount of ship repair and conversion work. The area of North Tyneside that faces the [[North Sea]] includes the small coastal resorts of [[Tynemouth]] and [[Whitley Bay]]. Tynemouth has, on the headland overlooking the river mouth, a combined medieval castle and priory, both in ruins.
