:::Hayek might be the best historian ever. The quote has just no relation with the rest of the paragraph. It might be appropriate in a discussion on the causes of the 3rd Reich. Likewise I could just add, without context, that Hitler was financed by major industries, like Krupp or Thyssen. But without context both claims are just red herrings. It might look like you want to say that it is the all just the socialists fault. That is wrong, just a wrong as saying that it is the capitalists fault. The Hayek quote is just inappropriate. : The relation to socialism is indeed an interesting one. The Nazi Party had in the beginning a racists and a socialist faction, which found each other since according to their world view industry was dominated by Jews. Nevertheless the Nazi were violently anti-communist and social democrat, maybe because they all aimed at the votes of the working class. Communists were among the first victiims, and the Nazi won in election by being anti-communist.
:Strasser was a prominent member of the Nazi party who was more socialist than racist. Actually, the democratic forces tried to engage Strasser, and alienate Hitler, and thus to domesticate the Nazi movement by splitting it. But Strasser was forced Hitler to back down, and was later killed in the night of the long knives, as a revenge for his earlier attempts to get the Nazis into government as junior partner, without Hitler, but with Strasser.
