Portmeirion is a bizarre village on the Welsh coast in Snowdonia.
It was designed and built by eccentric architect Sir Brian Clough Williams-Ellis.
The village is a composite of Italian baroque, William Morris Arts and Crafts and more unusual features.
It was opened in 1926 as a tourist attraction and later as a pottery centre.
The village (or should I say, The Village) is best known as the setting for the 1960s TV series "The Prisoner", featuring John McGoohan as a British spy undergoing mind alterations, incarceration, disorientation and general weirdness.
The series has been seen by some as an expose of the post Cambridge Spy Ring culture, a discussion of 60s counter culture, an entertaining spoof spy series and possibly as an allegory for how society forces us all to conform and how it oppresses and ultimately absorbs the differently minded.
Just as Pink Floyd's "Dark side of the moon" can be synchronised with "The wizard of Oz" it has been suggested that the opening sequences of "The Prisoner" can be synchronised with several songs from the Beatles "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band".
