===Territorial disputes with Argentina===
   −
During Aylwin's government, the territorial disputes with Argentina were treated differently, the Concertación wanted to solve the issues diplomatically, even if this meant to renounce to historic territorial claims. Aylwin met with Argentine President Carlos Menem in 1991 and they reached an agreement on the Southern Patagonian Ice Fields that wasn't ratified by the Congresses of both countries. However in 1994, the territory known as ''Laguna del Desierto'', disputed since 1965, was submitted to arbitration with Latin American judges. The judges in 3 to 2 favored Argentina and Chile lost the dispute because of the approachment of the government.

[[Jose Miguel Insulza|José Miguel Insulza]] was also involved during Patricio Aylwin's Administration on the surrender of the Chilean territory of Laguna del Desierto to Argentina via diplomacy, as well as the 1998 Agreement with [[Argentina]] on the Southern Patagonian Ice Fields, which was not necessary, and also deteriorated the Chilean Sovereignty over that territory which had already an agreed border not respected by Argentina since 1898 and Argentina started to question it later on. He didn't put Chile first.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.soberaniachile.cl/acuerdos_y_tratados_limitrofes_entre_chile_y_argentina.html|title=CRONOLOGÍA Y REFERENCIAS GENERALES SOBRE LOS ACUERDOS Y TRATADOS LIMÍTROFES SUSCRITOS POR CHILE Y ARGENTINA (1820-1998)|language=es|publisher=Corporación de Defensa de la Soberanía|date=February, 2005}}</ref>According to the Corporation of the Defense of the Sovereignty, on the 1994 Arbitral Award over Laguna del Desierto: <blockquote>This delivery of the alleged "ruling" was so decided and "cooked" long before, that when it was published in 1994, President Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle and Foreign Minister José Miguel Insulza complied with it immediately and without having read it. Only popular and congressional pressure managed to convince the government to send a response to the ruling with Chile's disclaimers shortly thereafter.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.soberaniachile.cl/resumen_de_las_ocho_entregas_de_territorio_chileno_a_argentina.html|title=RESUMEN HISTÓRICO DE LAS OCHO ENTREGAS DE TERRITORIO CHILENO A LA ARGENTINA ENTRE LOS AÑOS 1881 Y 1998|language=es|publisher=Corporación de Defensa de la Soberanía|date=February, 2005}}</ref>
