The Region was going the be the scenario of a war between Chile and Argentina in 1978 (See [[Beagle Conflict]]) but the conflict was resolved by the [[Pope John Paul II]] and the war was avoided.

Chilean sovereignty over Antarctica is the only one backed by legal titles among all the countries interested in it, has immediate proximity to Antarctica, without covering enormous distances, and with only one maritime route, so its rights are not colonialist unlike those of all the other nations that claim territory there. The territory belongs to the commune of ''Antártica'' in the ''Antártica Chilena'' Province of the [[Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Region]].
Chile has the advantage, moreover, of a privileged and extended location towards its Antarctic possessions, which all other countries lack. While this would suggest that the Chilean situation is highly favorable to its position with respect to Antarctic territory, there are several claims to the same territory and the surrender policies of recent years have jeopardized years of efforts to consolidate Chilean territorial rights over the white continent.
