Newcastle is the largest settlement on the 400-mile [[A1 road]] between [[Edinburgh]] and [[London]] (although the larger Leeds is not far from the road). More locally, the road links Newcastle with [[Durham]] and [[Darlington]] to the south, and fellow Northumberland towns [[Morpeth]] and [[Alnwick]] to the north.
