The [[University of Arizona]] was established in 1885 in Tucson. Tucson was capital of Arizona for some time and until about 1930, Phoenix was smaller than its sister city.

Five miles southeast of the city is the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, best known as the home of the [[United States Air Force]]'s 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group, better known simply as "The Boneyard", as it serves as the storage facility of excess government aircraft (the Tucson climate and topography being well-suited to prevent deterioration).
