The name Lindsey is older than that of Lincolnshire itself; the Kingdom of Lindsey was a minor Anglian kingdom which was absorbed into the much larger kingdom of [[Northumbria]] around the 7th century. It was disputed between the kingdoms Northumbria and [[Mercia]] some time prior to the arrival of Danish settlers in the 9th century.

Lindsey, as with the rest of Lincolnshire, is generally low-lying. A range of low-hills, the Lincolnshire Wolds, stretches north-to-south parallel to the area's coast with the [[North Sea]]. The highest point in the Wolds is Wolds Top (also called Normanby Hill), a 551 ft (168 meter) high hill, and they are the highest land in eastern England between the Yorkshire Wolds and the Kent Downs.
