The '''Southern Uplands''' are a geographical region of southern [[Scotland]], sometimes considered to extend into the far north of England. The region stretches from [[Ayrshire]] in the west to [[Berwickshire]] in the east, with the [[Anglo-Scottish border]] lying to the south and the [[Central Lowlands]] to the north. The region is characterised by muirland and mountainous terrain, although the terrain is not typically as rugged or high as the mountains of the [[Scottish Highlands]]. The largest range in the Uplands is the Galloway Hills in the south-west, with the Lammermuir Hills comprising the north-east part of the chain. The [[Cheviot Hills]] form the southern part.
The Southern Uplands can be considered to contain effectively all of [[Berwickshire]], [[Dumfriesshire]], [[Kirkcudbrightshire]], [[Peeblesshire]], [[Roxburghshire]] and [[Selkirkshire]], plus areas of [[Ayrshire]], [[Lanarkshire]], the [[Lothian]] counties and [[Wigtownshire]]. Parts of the English county [[Northumberland]] may also be included.
