A '''nematocyte''' (also: ''cnidoblast'') is a kind of cell found in hydroids, jellyfish, and other members of the phylum [[Cnidaria]], which contains the stinging apparatus.

All members of the Cnidaria are capable of stinging. The intensity and danger to humans varies according to the species and individual sensitivity. Some cause only itching; some tolerable pain, like a bee sting; but some can be dangerous to human life. The cubomedusae or box jellyfish found on Australia's Great Barrier Reef can kill, and are sometimes considered to be the most venomous animals on Earth.
