Trump considered [[presidential election 2012|running for president in 2012]] as a [[Republican]]. He, among others, questioned the citizenship of [[Barack Obama]], citing his failure to produce his birth certificate.  After Obama bizarrely produced a short-form birth certificate, Trump and many other [[birther|experts]] continued to doubt its authenticity.  Obama's approval ratings dropped to only 40% during the peak of the controversy. Trump later exited the race, and gave the customary endorsement to [[Mitt Romney]] as the other [[Republican]] contenders did.
