Historically there were many breweries in the town, facilitated by high quality ground-water. Coors (previously Bass) and Marstons are the two remaining large breweries. Marmite is produced in Burton as a by-product of brewing. Due to the local history of brewing, the verb ''Burtonize'' (meaning to enrich alcohol with mineral salts, especially for brewing alcohol) has been in use since at least 1897.  Branston Pickle is also produced in Burton.
