In 1963, Clarke filed suit in Shreveport against Gowen Sanatorium, Inc., regarding the illness and death of his 82-year-old mother, Maude Steele Clarke, while she was a patient at the nursing facility. Mrs. Clarke, who had both physical limitations and mental senility, fell from her bed and broke a hip while a nurse had temporarily stepped aside. She subsequently died of other causes.
