The National Holocaust Memorial is a solemn and sacred place in Ottawa designed to honour the millions of innocent people who were murdered under the Nazi regime and to recognize the significant contributions of Holocaust survivors in Canada. It’s shocking and disturbing to see it defaced today. Protests and demonstrations are an essential part of our democracy. Disfiguring a sacred monument in a way that will traumatize victims, survivors and their families is not.
I am reaching out to Ottawa’s Jewish community and other faith leaders, and to the Ottawa Police Service. Let’s continue to unite together as a community to fight against hatred in all its forms.
Le Mémorial national de l'Holocauste est un lieu solennel et sacré à Ottawa, conçu pour rendre hommage aux millions d'innocents qui ont été assassinés sous le régime nazi et pour reconnaître les contributions importantes des survivants de l'Holocauste au Canada. Il est choquant et troublant de le voir aujourd'hui défiguré. Les protestations et les manifestations sont un élément essentiel de notre démocratie. Défigurer un monument sacré d'une manière qui traumatise les victimes, les survivants et leurs familles ne l'est pas.
Je m'adresse à la communauté juive d'Ottawa, aux autres chefs religieux et au service de police d'Ottawa. Continuons à nous unir en tant que communauté pour lutter contre la haine sous toutes ses formes.

The National Holocaust Monument in Ottawa is a sacred space of remembrance and reflection to honour the 6 million Jews who were murdered by the Nazis. Vandalizing the monument does nothing to bring peace to the Middle East. It is an act of vile antisemitism and a hate crime. Full stop.
This is a disgusting display of Jew Hatred in our nation’s capital. I will be speaking immediately with the relevant federal authorities & law enforcement agencies about this.
May the memories of the 6 million Jews who perished in the Holocaust be a blessing.
