He was motivated by the suffering in the old and sick people about him, especially an instance when he saw a corpse. Siddhartha meditated under a tree for a long time, and when he emerged from his meditation, he proclaimed himself to be enlightened. Siddhartha was later simply known as "the Buddha," His teachings were written down 400 years after his death. His primary teachings were the 4 Noble Truths, and the 8-Fold Path.
