County Durham lies in north-eastern England, in the heart of the former Anglian kingdom Northumbria. It has a coastline on the [[North Sea]] in the east, stretching from the [[River Tees|Tees]] estuary in the south to the Tyne estuary in the north. The River Tees forms the county's southern border with [[Yorkshire]]. [[Cumberland]] and [[Westmorland]] lie across the Pennine Hills to the west, with [[Northumberland]] lying to the north.

The highest point in the County Palatinate is Burnhope Seat, a moorland fell in the North Pennines with a height of 2,451 ft or 747 meters. The heart of the county is dominated by the River Wear, which rises in the Pennines at Wearhead and forms a meander around Durham Cathedral in the county town, also passing through Wolsingham, Bishop Auckland and Chester-le-Street, before entering the North Sea at Sunderland.
