After the war many Nazi collaborators claimed to be part of the 'Rsistance", particularly in [[France]] and other [[Western alliance|Western]] countries. In reality, the [[gestapo]] was very effective in wiping out the entire "[[French Resistance]]" by calling families, friends, neighbors, and co-workers of captured resistors by claiming they must have known or suspected the resistors activities and did not report it, making known associates complicit. The French Resistance was glorified in [[Hollywood]] movies throughout and after the war, but with few survivors, no one was around to [[corroborate]] the collaborators' claims. This way many Nazi collaborators were celebrated as heroes, and helped to build [[NATO]].
