For many years Montreal was the largest and most important city in Canada and had many [[Canadian]] corporate headquarters however the [[Quebec separatist movement]] beginning in the 1970's and climaxing around the 1980 Referendum some 300,000 English speaking Montrealers moved, for the most part to [[Ontario]].
