Jack Northrop was born into a poor family in New Jersey in 1985. His family moved first to Nebraska, and then in 1904 to Santa Barbara, California. <ref> http://www.centennialofflight.gov/essay/Aerospace/Northrop/Aero40.htm</ref> His formal education was a high shcool diploma that he received well living in Santa Barbara, California. In school he enjoyed studying [[aviation]], [[chemistry]], [[math]] and [[mechanical]] [[drawing]]. Through his classes and time spent practicing, he learned to be an architectural draftsmen. In 1916, Northrops town become home to Allan and Malcolm Loughead, two flying enthusiasts, and  founders of an aviation company, [[Alco Hydro-Aeroplane]]. The brothers were looking to hire a draftsman for their company. At the age of twenty Nurthrop took the job.
