In 2008, the Lions became the first ever to go 0–16 and the second team in the post-merger era to go winless in a season (a feat later matched by the [[Cleveland Browns]]; the [[Tampa Bay Buccaneers]] were the first to not win a game in a season in the post-merger era, during its inaugural season when there were only 14 games in a season).

The Detroit Lions have won four NFL championships (1935, 1952, 1953, and 1957) all prior to the advent of the [[Super Bowl]]. The team has never appeared in the Super Bowl, one of two NFL teams existing at the time of the AFL-NFL merger never to appear (the Browns are the other) and the oldest existing franchise not to have done so (along with being the only team in the NFC - including expansion franchises - to have not appeared).
