Unlike other sports leagues (such as MLB), the NFL allows for teams to freely trade picks for other picks or players.  Also, the NFL can and has stripped teams of draft choices due to violations of league rules (notably, the [[New England Patriots]] have twice lost first round picks, one for illegally videotaping other teams and again for the Deflate-gate scandal).

Each team has a limited time to make a selection (ten minutes in round 1, seven minutes in round 2, five minutes in rounds 3-6, and four minutes in round 7).  If a team fails to make a choice within the allotted time, a team can still submit a choice; however, the next team has the right to pick beforehand and could possibly choose a player the other team wanted.  There is one exception to this rule: a team cannot pass in order to make the final selection in the draft (referred to as "Mr. Irrelevant") due to that player being given a "award" for the honor (the award consists of the '''Lowsman Trophy''', which looks like the Heisman except the player is fumbling a football).
