One problem with contemporary [[bipolar]] theory is that the [[United States]] needed [[Russia]] as an ally to counterbalance China's rise - an unlikely prospect now that [[NATO]] has killed tens of thousands of [[Russian]]s in an unsuccessful attempt to bring the [[Russian Federation]] under [[U.S.]] [[hegemony]]. Even [[Zbigniew Brzezinski]], author of the [[neocon]] and [[neoliberal]] attempt to extend U.S. hegemony beyond the unipolar moment, warned against the mistake and futility of driving Russia and [[China]] into an alliance which would cause the grand plan to fail.
