Italy Expels Two Men Accused of Assaulting Rabbi in Milan.

Two men accused of assaulting a rabbi in Milan last month have been expelled from Italy, the country’s interior minister announced, as Italian authorities take action following an attack that alarmed the local Jewish community.

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said the two men were repatriated after allegedly attacking the rabbi, together with a third suspect, at a bus stop in Milan’s Bande Nere neighborhood on Sept. 16.
 +

“There is no room in our country for hatred and violence, and no act of antisemitism will ever be tolerated,” Piantedosi said last week while announcing the expulsions.

The victim, the chief rabbi of a synagogue on Milan’s Via Soderini, was waiting for a bus when three young men approached and surrounded him.
 +

The rabbi, who is in his 60s, said the men attempted to get his attention before one grabbed his hat, put it on his own head, and began mocking him. When the rabbi started recording the encounter, one of the men allegedly kicked him from behind, pushing him from the pavement toward the road.

“It was as if they were proud of what they were doing,” the rabbi later told Bet Magazine Mosaico-CEM, a publication of Milan’s Jewish community.

Police identified the three suspects, two of them brothers, shortly after the incident. They were reportedly aged 19, 20, and 21.

The 20-year-old accused of carrying out the assault was arrested and ordered to report to authorities twice a week. He is expected to go on trial Nov. 12 on charges of propaganda and incitement to racial hatred. Milan’s police chief also issued orders barring all three suspects from the city for one year.

More than 75 senior retired US generals, admirals, and military lawyers have signed an open letter rejecting claims that Israel committed genocide in Gaza, saying that the facts and applicable legal standard do not support such a finding.

The signatories, including retired officers who commanded US armed forces in combat, wrote in the October 7 letter: “As retired senior military leaders and legal experts, on this, the third anniversary of Hamas’s October 7, 2023 brutal attack on Israel, we reject claims that Israel committed genocide in Gaza."

The letter states that a finding of genocide requires evidence of acts intended to destroy a protected national, ethnic, racial, or religious group, in whole or in part. The signatories said Israel “has neither intended to, nor destroyed, Palestinians as a group in Gaza," and argued that the evidence points to the contrary.

They also rejected claims based primarily on the number of civilians killed during the war. “Civilian deaths occurring during combat, however tragic, are insufficient, by themselves, to support a finding of genocidal intent," the letter states.

The signatories said many of them had commanded US forces against enemies who hide behind civilians, and said they understood the difficulty of fighting under such circumstances. They wrote that there is no perfect attack, but that commanders are required to use available information, exercise judgment, comply with legal obligations, and protect civilians.

The letter says assessments of Israeli combat operations by some of its signatories found extensive precautions aimed at avoiding civilian casualties, including leaflets, phone calls, text messages, radio and television broadcasts, social media notices, evacuation instructions, protected corridors, and tactical pauses. WASHINGTON, Oct 7 (Reuters) - The FBI has arrested an 18-year-old man who had been plotting to carry out a mass shooting at the Mall of America ​near Minneapolis in the name of ISIS, according to court filings.

He ‌was arrested on Tuesday after an FBI undercover agent sold the Minnesota man, Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, an AK-47, ammunition and magazines for $600, according to the complaint. Mohamud told the informant ​he planned to use the items to kill 30 to 60 people ​at an event at the mall in late October.

Mohamud was charged ⁠with one count of knowingly receiving a firearm and ammunition in order to ​commit an act of terrorism. His lawyer did not immediately respond to a ​request for comment.

According to the complaint, Mohamud told an FBI source on various messaging platforms that he intended to travel overseas to fight on behalf of al-Shabaab, a designated foreign terrorist ​organization. He said if he couldn't travel, he planned to conduct a mass ​shooting. He later said he wanted to join ISIS.
