1. **English quotations:** Use quotation marks to identify quoted English text. Do not italicise English quotations merely because they are quotations or originate from an older source.
2. **Foreign-language passages:** Italicise substantial quotations and passages in Latin, French, German, and other foreign languages to distinguish them from the principal English text.
3. **Mixed-language passages:** Italicise only the foreign-language portions, leaving the surrounding English text in roman type.
