expanding and correcting errors - MySQL is a database not a programming language
MySQL is the open-source version of [[SQL]], and the programming language for the relational databases used by wiki systems.
MySQL is an [[open-source]] [[relational database]] based on [[SQL]]. According to its creators, it is "the world's most popular open source database", and is "used in more than 11 million installations"<ref>http://www.mysql.com/why-mysql/</ref>.
It is one of the two databases supported by [[MediaWiki]] (the other being [[PostgreSQL]])<ref>http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:LocalSettings.php#Database_settings</ref>. It is used by [[Wikipedia]], as well as other [[wiki]]s that use MediaWiki.
