| | + | CHAOS Between Democrats Throws Major Wrench in Leftist Midterm Takeover Plans | Ep. 99. |
| | + | Author : Stu and Dave Do America. Nov 2, 2026 |
| | + | [...] |
| | + | Haley Stevens now endorsing Mike Rogers, the Republican, amid Michigan Democratic feud. Uh, this is, so this kind of came out of nowhere. |
| | + | We'll tell you the backstory here in a second, but again, this is the Democrat who won like 48% of the vote in the primary. |
| | + | So, you know, has a big audience in Michigan. People wanted a lot of people wanted her to win. She just, a few days before the election, goes on her social media and says this: |
| | + | |
| | + | "Hey Michigan, as you may have seen, our Democratic nominee for US Senate, Abdul said that I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away. And he's right. And that's why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today. I don't belong in Abdul's campaign. I do not stand with Hasan Piker who gets trafficked on our college campuses. A dear friend of mine earlier today was saying that education is on the ballot and she's absolutely right and what our students see, what our children see, and who we are as Michiganers is not hate and is not what we are getting out from our Democratic nominee right now. So, I am just one person. I love this state. As some of you know, I've uh, you know, run a campaign saying that it was a love letter to Michigan, and I'm here to declare who we are as Michiganers. This is Phil Hart's seat for the US Senate. This is the conscience of the Senate right now and our Michigan moment. And I'm just letting you know where I am. I'm still a very proud Democrat. I still very much uh believe in everything I've voted for and said and I've worked really hard and will continue uh to do so and all the ways life's opportunities afford. Godspeed and love you all so much." |
| | + | |
| | + | -- It's a really shocking moment, Dave. An endorsement like that, especially done on one she seems to be at an 80° angle going down a hill and has put the emergency brake on for some reason. |
| | + | |
| | + | -- Yeah. [clears throat] Yeah, as a Michigander, I definitely got to say that I got to agree with her there. I think it's good that she's coming out against the party and uh you know, I like her positions. [...] |
| | + | |
| | + | But I know she does have a big fan base and I agree with her. I'm glad that she did actually come out against him because as I've been saying for a long time, it's not a good idea. If you look in the comments sections of even the people supporting him, it's all very just anti. How to say it. It's just anti-white and the people that go are voting for him and it's just kind of it just comes off very ignorant and racist. |
| | + | |
| | + | And I think the problem is we do have a serious issues in Michigan. So many people have been in office that have done absolutely nothing. It needs to flip. The Democrats have had it for way too long. |
| | + | I was raised in a very democratic area... I mean it's Michigan. You have unions. You have all kinds of stuff. There's a lot of things I believe. |
| | + | But the idea of El Sayed, it's absurd to me how many people are backing this guy just because it seems to be like a middle finger to Trump and it's so bizarre and stupid, because it has nothing to do with it. It has nothing to do with him. |
| | + | |
| | + | -- Yeah. There's a lot of people and this is certainly true for Texas as well, where people are like trying to prove the point against Donald Trump that they're upset about this or that and the way they're going to or maybe it's Paxton. |
| | + | And then the way they're going to like express that frustration is to make their own lives miserable in their states by electing people who are awful. |
| | + | So I don't know how exactly that proves that point, but apparently it does to a lot of people. |
| | + | |
| | + | -- No, they do. Like they're so angry at Trump that they want to elect a homosexual Lego man into the office in Texas. And I think it's bizarre to me to go like, well, let's just ruin everything because we're upset about a war or we're upset about what and I understand that people are, but to destroy your own state seems so asinine to me. |
| | + | |
| | + | -- Yeah, it's bizarre. El Sayed did respond to this. I mean, it's a big story, right? |
| | + | Like she, this is a Democratic congresswoman who has the voice of a big chunk of that state. She's more moderate than El-Sayed.. A lot of it is the way you play this game is the people who voted for Stevens, right? They might not be comfortable with El Sayed. They can't stand El Sayed. You have to get them comfortable. |
| | + | The same thing, by the way, we should note kind of happened in Texas where Cornin who lost the primary didn't would not come across and say, "Hey, you should vote for Paxton." And that's been a real problem for Paxton in the state, because -- yeah, it has. You can't get those voters over. Like .. you need a permission structure, right, to create that. |
| | + | Hey, I really hated this guy a month ago. How can I change my mind? |
| | + | Well, the guy I liked is okay with it. So, I think I'm okay. The permission structure here again very, very late in the campaign after 40% of the vote has already come in, so it might not be... that might not make that much of a difference. But it's a big deal here. |
| | + | |
| | + | Let me give you the response, Dave, from El Sayed, who is just among the douchiest people I've ever seen in my entire life. And I don't mean in politics ever... |
| | + | |
| | + | -- I just think that this whole woke ideology of trying to push people out just because you think they're different is ridiculous. And not digging into this guy's past, like the more stuff that comes out with him, it's like, he might as well just have a bomb strapped to him at this point for everything that's coming out. |
| | + | |
| | + | -- It's at this point where we're like, you know, if they discovered a photo of him buying the ticket for Muhammad Ata, it would be deemed off limits [laughter] for us to ask about. |
| | + | Like it's just, again, I don't know what you know, his family has some weird freaking history. I will say that. |
| | + | -- And he won't answer for it. And like the answer is always like, I can't believe you dare to ask me about the fact that my sister tweeted that she she was in the Muslim Brotherhood. |
| | + | It's like, well, of course they're going to ask you about that. He has no answer for it. And everyone just kind of lets him off the hook which is by the way I would just note not how things operate when it's a Republican that has difficult questions to answer. .. |

| | + | FOOL. Fox News, Nov 3, 2026. |
| | + | |
| | + | Hailey endorsement gives permission for other Democrats to vote Republican. Local Michigan Democrats have already started. |
| | + | |
| | + | -- Some Detroiters have said, |
| | + | |
| | + | -- [Lady]: "Listen, if Kamala Harris walked down the street holding his hand, I still would not vote for him. Now, will she and President Obama be able to, you know, sway a few? Sure." |
| | + | |
| | + | -- But not you? [Laughter] |
| | + | |
| | + | -- [Lady]: "I can think for myself." |
| | + | |
| | + | -- Jesse: What goes around comes around. It's not like Abdul hasn't gone against the grain. A couple of years ago, he called Obama a warmonger with a -- but Hailey can't speak her mind? Whatever happened to the Big Tent? The tent is big enough for Abdul but not Stevens? We told you once you let them in, it would be a purge. A moderate white-fee people congressman from a Rust Belt swing state just lowered the tent to make room for a Muslim socialist who backs reparations and hates fireworks on the Fourth of July. And Chuck Schumer, the so-called Palestinian, sided with the radical Muslim. It's because Democrats see the real threat as MAGA. |
| | + | |
| | + | -- [CNN's Anderson Cooper]: "Why is it okay now, why can you afford now to give MAGA another Senate seat in November?" |
| | + | |
| | + | -- [Stevens]: "Why is it okay to have the Democratic Party and a top nominee injecting this type of anger and lack of kindness?" |
| | + | |
| | + | -- Jesse: Abdul has been courting voters at mosques where speakers have called America the House of Satan. His family is tied in with the Muslim Brotherhood, and he's playing footsie with a gay ayatollah. Who really betrayed who here? |
| | + | |
| | + | -- My name is -- [Applause] |
| | + | |
| | + | -- [Abdul to Muslim gathering]: "My name... -- that name is just as American as Mike or Donald or whatever JD stands for." |
| | + | |
| | + | -- Jesse: It's not about his name. It's about what he stands for. And it's why Pelosi didn't want anything to do with him. |
| | + | |
| | + | Note: I've preserved the wording as it appears in the photographs, including apparent transcription or printing errors. A few unclear phrases, particularly "That doesn't believe," "white-fee people," and "called Obama a warmonger with a --", may need checking against the original broadcast. |
| | + | |
| | + | -- [Donny Deutsch to Nancy Pelosi]: "When you say Israel doesn't have the right to be a Jewish state, that's anti-Semitic as far as I'm concerned." |
| | + | |
| | + | -- [Pelosi]: "Who says that?" |
| | + | |
| | + | -- [Deutsch]: "Mamdani has said that, El-Sayed has said that. That doesn't believe they should be a Jewish state. That's concerning." |
| | + | |
| | + | -- [Pelosi]: "No, it's more than concerning, it's wrong. It's wrong, and it is a reflection of the Democrats and the Congress of the United States. This new person, Michigan, we'll see if he gets elected to the Congress." |
| | + | |
| | + | -- Jesse: Nancy is savvy enough to know that Abdul is nothing but trouble, but after that, they forced her to endorse him. She hadn't so far. Turns out, and I do have to say it, Nancy was right. And now she's like, "See, told you so." You know who really looks like a fool? Barack Obama. Put his legacy on the line for this guy. Now the rest of the party is running away like they smell a skunk. Democrats won't say it on TV, but behind the scenes, they are secretly hoping Abdul goes down. |
| | + | |
| | + | -- [Stevens to Scott Jennings]: "At the end of the day, I made a decision, and, you know what? I'm hearing from a ton of people, and maybe they don't want to come forward, but I'm hearing from a ton of people, all over, who are agreeing. And are thanking me for just saying what I feel." |
| | + | |
| | + | -- Jesse: The dam is breaking. Fetterman called him the Midwest Mamdani. Now Manchin is backing Rogers. |
| | + | |
| | + | -- [Manchin]: "I know Mike. I've worked with Mike before. He's intelligent, he's smart, and he's a good person. That's all I have said. Okay, I don't go out and talk about other people or the opposition. I don't know those people. They are saying all these things. I just know Mike is solid." |
| | + | |
| | + | -- Jesse: The future of the Democratic Party riding on this election. Michigan is an early 2028 primary state. If Democrats don't keep this Senate seat, their chances of taking the Senate are pretty slim. Abdul never pivoted to the center after the primary, and don't expect AOC to do so in 2028 if Abdul wins. If he pulls it off, first of all, he's going to be insufferable. Second of all, Democrats nationwide are going to be running brasher, unapologetic socialists, and the Schumers and Hakeems won't be able to stop him. This cocky and combative strain of left-wing populism runs directly through Abdul, and if he loses, that loses, and the fortunes of Bernie and Warren and the Squad are in dire straits. But no one has any idea how this Stevens-Abdul beef will play. Remember, Trump absorbed several high-profile DEI attacks in 2016 and survived. It may have made him stronger... |

| | + | |
| | + | The ‘Third Worldist’ roots of the Islamo-left alliance. |
| | + | Nov 2, 2026. |
| | + | The New Left’s estrangement from class politics went hand in hand with ‘the cultural turn’ towards identity politics. Above all, it involved a turn towards a distinctly counter-Enlightenment tradition of thought. There was plenty of resistance to this shift among significant figures on the New Left, writ large in works such as EP Thompson’s The Poverty of Theory. But there’s little doubt that influential New Left-era thinkers, especially in France, drew most of their inspiration from those who sought to diminish or even dethrone human reason, from the protests of the Romantics to reactionaries like Friedrich Nietzsche or the card-carrying Nazi Martin Heidegger – the ‘unavoidable’ thinker as the New Left-adjacent Jacques Derrida described him. Even those associated with the New Left who still invoked Marx, like French Communist intellectual Louis Althusser, emptied his work of its ‘Hegelian’ or humanist-centred content. |
| | + | |
| | + | Many on the New Left used these deeply reactionary, counter-Enlightenment thinkers to ruthlessly critique post-Enlightenment modernity – or even the post-Socratic West, in Heidegger’s case. And like much of the counterculture more broadly, the New Left tended to damn all those living within Western society too, as conformist victims – the duped members of the ‘society of the spectacle’. They reduced Westerners to mere ‘bearers’ of ‘relations of production’, in Althusser’s words, or cast them, Matrix-like, as effects of structures or systems of power forever beyond their control. |
| | + | |
| | + | Here we come to one of the key moments in understanding the development of what would become the Islamo-left. With the turn away from domestic class politics, large parts of the New Left simultaneously embraced the ‘Third World’ – a term coined in 1952 by French demographer Alfred Sauvy to designate the Third Estate-like revolutionary force emerging in the colonial and the post-colonial sphere. In this reading, the Third World, from Vietnam to China to Cuba to Algeria, was set to challenge the established capitalist and Communist powers of the first and second worlds. |
| | + | |
| | + | In part, the New Left’s Third Worldism built on traditional left-wing anti-imperialism – that expression of political solidarity with colonised peoples in their fight for the same freedom and autonomy enjoyed by people in North America and Europe. No doubt many left-wingers were still classically anti-imperialist. But there were elements to the New Left’s relationship with the decolonising postwar world that were new. For some, their Third Worldism was based less on class solidarity than on cultural identity – that is, on an almost psychological identification with the radically ‘other’, precisely because the Third World was not the West. As one American radical wrote of Fidel Castro’s Cuba in the late 1960s: ‘We look to Cuba not only because of what we sense Cuba to be, but because of what the United States is not… we needed to tie our fates to someone, somewhere in the world, who was seizing the chances for a humane society.’ |
| | + | |
| | + | There were modernist, interwar antecedents to this identification with the anti-Western and often the anti-modern, too. Think of ‘primitivism’, that modernist celebration of people and ways of life deemed closer to nature. Or think of the French Surrealists of the 1920s, who threw their lot in with the Berbers after a French colonial intervention in Morocco in 1925. ‘We profoundly hope that revolutions, wars, colonial insurrections, will annihilate this Western civilisation’, ran one of the Surrealists’ innumerable manifestos. |
| | + | |
| | + | Elements of the New Left took this to another level. The Third World was effectively conjured up as the means by which the West might be de-Westernised and saved from itself. This is captured well by Jean-Paul Sartre’s infamous preface to the so-called ‘bible of decolonisation’, Frantz Fanon’s The Wretched of the Earth (1961). Going far beyond anything Fanon actually wrote (The Wretched of the Earth was principally a radically humanist work about and on national liberation), Sartre hailed the rise of the Third World for exposing Western ideas of humanism, liberty and equality as ‘an ideology of lies’. From this perspective, independence movements, from Cuba to Algeria, were simultaneously in the process of purging the West of itself – exposing Europe and America’s grand heritage as no more than a ‘justification for pillage’. ‘We in Europe, too, are being decolonised’, concluded Sartre, ‘that is to say that the settler in every one of us is being savagely rooted out’. |
| | + | |
| | + | Sartre may have got carried away with his own rhetorical brilliance – after all, his political affiliations and sympathies seemed to be in perpetual motion throughout his life. But many other New Leftist elements seemed thoroughly committed to embracing the Third Worldist ‘other’ as the gravedigger of the West. In ways that anticipate the contemporary leftist identification with Islamism, New Left Third Worldists tended to recast themselves as alien ‘others’ within their own societies. In America, anti-Vietnam War protesters filled the streets chanting, ‘Ho, Ho, Ho Chi Minh, the NLF is gonna win’. Elsewhere, Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara became an icon to be emulated, while upper-class Parisian radical Régis Debray transformed Guevara’s guerrilla exploits into a voluntarist model (‘focoism’) for revolutionary action throughout the West and beyond in Revolution in the Revolution? (1967) – a model taken to terroristic extremes by the West German Red Army Faction, Italy’s Red Brigades and America’s Weather Underground. As the politics of Third Worldism streamed through the New Left, this also supercharged racial identity politics among minorities – it’s no coincidence that black separatist movements began flourishing in late-1960s America. |
| | + | |
| | + | It was in the Third Worldist context, too, that Palestine first began to emerge as what it is today – the anti-Western rallying cry of today’s Islamo-left. |

| | + | On the morning of the US midterm elections, US President Donald Trump made a startling claim in an interview with Fox & Friends: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu himself initiated a plan to end nearly $4 billion in annual American assistance to Israel. |
| | + | |
| | + | The hosts repeatedly pressed Trump to clarify whether he meant military aid, cash, or weapons deliveries. The president insisted that the arrangement would end by December, while Israel would remain free to purchase American weapons. |
| | + | |
| | + | Trump also explained the political calculation behind the move: taking away one of the Democrats’ most effective arguments against Republicans, particularly in Michigan, where Israel has become a central issue in the fiercely contested Senate race. But his announcement raises a major question: What happens to the existing US-Israel military assistance agreement, which runs through 2028? |

| | + | Togochog, a University of Michigan student and former sane person, violently attacked Jewish conservative influencer Liz Benichou Sunday afternoon during a pick-up-the-mic debate in Ann Arbor.. |

| | + | SCOOP: Prosecutors authorize charges against Michigan student who allegedly attacked Jewish commentator. |
| | + | Video footage appeared to show Temulun Togochog pushing commentator Liz Benichou to the ground and jumping on her during a free speech event. |
| | + | Jessica Russak-Hoffman. |
| | + | (Nov. 3, 2026 / JNS) The Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office in Ann Arbor, Mich., authorized charges against Temulun Togochog, a University of Michigan student who appeared to be captured on film assaulting a Jewish woman during a free speech event on campus on Sunday. |
| | + | Alyssa Fountain, administrative assistant at the prosecutor’s office, told JNS that the case was submitted to the office on Monday. “We thoroughly reviewed the evidence that was submitted to us,” she said. |
| | + | |
| | + | Fountain told JNS that Togochog will be charged with a count of assaulting, resisting or obstructing an officer and two counts of assault or assault and battery. (JNS sought comment from the University of Michigan.) |
| | + | |
| | + | “There is no court date at this time, but a felony warrant for these charges will be issued by the court and a court date set once she has been arraigned on the charges,” she said. |
| | + | |
| | + | On Sunday, Liz Benichou, who is Jewish, took part in an event at the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor alongside fellow conservative commentators Cam Higby and Joe Redden. |
| | + | |
| | + | The trio talked to students about Iran and about Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for Senate in Michigan whom the Republican Jewish Coalition has called “the most antisemitic U.S. Senate candidate in America.” |
| | + | |
| | + | In video footage that circulated online, someone alleged to be Togochog approaches a table, at which Redden and Higby are seated, and debates Redden about Islam. The person uses her phone to slap Redden in the face. |
| | + | |
| | + | The person quickly denies slapping Redden and calls the commentators “anti-Muslim.” |
| | + | |
| | + | In the video, the person then appears to approach Benichou, who says that if she “walked around like this in Iran, what would happen to her?” The person appears to push Benichou to the ground and jump on her. Another student pulls the assailant off. |
| | + | |
| | + | When University of Michigan campus police arrived, the person appeared to resist arrest and, after being handcuffed, shouts “I should have f***ing killed you when I f***ing had the chance” and “I’ve already been to a mental hospital, and I’ll go again if it means killing her. |

| | + | ... "As a mother and grandmother, it sickens me to think of children arriving at school to find their buses defaced with swastikas and hateful antisemitic messages. No Jewish child or family should have to endure this kind of fear and intimidation," the governor said. |
| | + | |
| | + | She called for criminal action against those responsible, stating, "Those responsible must be identified, arrested, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law." |
| | + | |
| | + | Mamdani's condemnation came amid longstanding criticism from members of New York City's Jewish community over his positions on Israel. |
| | + | |
| | + | During his mayoral campaign, he faced controversy over statements made on October 8, 2023, one day after the Hamas massacre in southern Israel, as well as his refusal to condemn the slogan “globalize the intifada". |
| | + | |
| | + | The criticism continued after he took office. On his first day as mayor, Mamdani revoked several executive orders concerning Israel that had been issued by his predecessor, Eric Adams. |
| | + | |
| | + | He also became the first mayor of New York City to boycott the annual Israel Day Parade. |
| | + | |
| | + | Hochul, who has expressed support for Israel, faced criticism of her own for endorsing Mamdani during the mayoral election despite concerns about his rhetoric. |
| | + | |
| | + | The governor later said she had encouraged Mamdani to improve relations with the city's Jewish community. |
| | + | |
| | + | In an August interview with The New York Times, Hochul suggested that Mamdani should devote greater attention to managing the city rather than engaging in controversies involving Israel. |

| | + | Haley Stevens says decision to withdraw support for El-Sayed ‘was not made for me by anyone else’. |
| | + | By Victor Nava. |
| | + | Published Nov. 3, 2026 |
| | + | |
| | + | Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.) called it “sexism” Monday to suggest her fiancé was behind her shock decision to withdraw support for Democrat Abdul El-Sayed in the Michigan Senate midterm election. |
| | + | |
| | + | Stevens, who lost the Michigan Democratic Senate primary to El-Sayed in August, was adamant that the decision to buck her party and endorse Republican Mike Rogers in the key race “was not made for me by anyone else.” |
| | + | |
| | + | “My decision to withdraw my endorsement of Abdul El-Sayed and support Mike Rogers has angered many Democrats. I understand why. But it was not impulsive, and it was not made for me by anyone else. It was a decision of conscience,” the congresswoman wrote in a lengthy X post. |
| | + | |
| | + | “Some critics have also dragged my fiancé into this, suggesting he or others must have made my decision for me,” Stevens continued. “Think about what that says. A woman can serve in Congress, run statewide, and fight for her convictions, and still be told that when she makes a choice people dislike, someone else must be pulling the strings. |
| | + | |
| | + | “That is sexism dressed up as political analysis.” |
| | + | |
| | + | Jason Turkish, a Jewish Democrat, disability rights advocate and Stevens’ fiancé, threw his support behind Rogers last week – arguing that El-Sayed’s rhetoric is putting Jews in danger. |
| | + | |
| | + | At the time, Stevens was still backing El-Sayed and had sought to appear alongside the Democratic Senate hopeful at a campaign event. |
| | + | |
| | + | However, Stevens claims she was told she was “no longer welcome” on the campaign trail with El-Sayed after she asked the candidate to disavow an antisemitic campaign ad and rhetoric from lefty streamer Hasan Piker and Tucker Carlson. |
| | + | |
| | + | “My fiancé has his own views. I have mine. I made this decision, and I am proud of it,” she wrote. “Do not question my independence simply because you disagree with my conclusion.” |
| | + | |
| | + | Stevens explained that once she concluded El-Sayed was “not fit to serve,” she decided to back Rogers “with the hope that he can serve in the tradition of John McCain: a senator willing to put country before party and stand up to his own side when conscience requires it.” |
| | + | |
| | + | “Instead of asking why a lifelong Democrat reached this point, some leaders rushed to condemn me, question my motives, and push me out,” she wrote. “That response reveals something deeply troubling about what is missing in today’s Democratic Party. |
| | + | |
| | + | “We cannot preach inclusion while punishing dissent. We cannot promise to heal a divided country if we cannot tolerate disagreement among ourselves. And we cannot build a lasting majority by making Americans feel their concerns are unwelcome.” |
| | + | |
| | + | Stevens signaled that she intends to remain a Democrat and “help lead” an effort to build “a stronger, more welcoming, more courageous Democratic Party.” |

| | + | |
| | + | Trump's Tone-Deaf Rhetoric and Perception of Corruption. |
| | + | |
| | + | His boast, "We're making a freaking fortune," struck a particularly jarring note amid the economic struggles facing ordinary Americans. |
| | + | |
| | + | It reinforced the perception that he was disconnected from people's hardships and more concerned with personal wealth and self-enrichment than governing. |
| | + | |
| | + | Trump's Interference in Candidate Selection. |
| | + | |
| | + | Trump intervened in Republican primaries and backed candidates whose campaigns became politically contentious. His emphasis on personal loyalty raised questions about whether his endorsements were strengthening the party or deepening its internal divisions. |
| | + | |
| | + | Notable examples of his interventions included: |
| | + | |
| | + | Texas: His intervention in the Senate primary to promote Ken Paxton over incumbent John Cornyn. |
| | + | |
| | + | North Carolina: His backing of Michael Whatley in the open Senate race. |
| | + | |
| | + | South Carolina: His involvement in Republican candidate selection and support for Darline Graham. |
| | + | |
| | + | Michigan: His support for Mike Rogers in the Senate race. |
| | + | |
| | + | Indiana: His backing of primary challengers against seven Republican state senators who opposed his redistricting push. Five of his challengers won their primaries. |
| | + | |
| | + | Missouri: His late endorsement of Rick Brattin in a congressional Republican primary. |
| | + | |
| | + | These interventions highlighted the growing tension between Trump's control over the Republican Party and the political independence of its candidates and elected officials. |

| | + | |
| | + | The Broader Takeaway. |
| | + | |
| | + | The election reflected a convergence of economic frustration, concerns about presidential priorities and self-enrichment, divisions over Trump's control of the Republican Party, and resistance to his immigration crackdown. |

| | + | ‘This is an earthquake’: Latino voters rush back to Democrats. |
| | + | Nov 4, 2026. |
| | + | This is an earthquake,” Democratic Latino operative Sergio Gonzalez told POLITICO on the sidelines of Texas Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa’s victory party in Austin. “Latinos were angry. They were angry this election.” |
| | + | |
| | + | While the entire country shifted toward Democrats, nowhere shifted as dramatically as predominantly Latino areas. Across the nation Latino voters of all backgrounds — Mexican Americans and Central Americans in the Southwest, heartland and on the West Coast, Puerto Ricans and Dominicans in Pennsylvania, Venezuelans, Puerto Ricans and Cubans in Florida — unhappy with the economy and furious over Trump’s immigration enforcement fled the party in droves. |
| | + | |
| | + | In a single cycle, Democrats appeared to reset Republicans’ gradual decade-long gains with Latino voters. |
| | + | |
| | + | Latino voters who “broke for President Trump in historical numbers [in 2024] … had to make a hard change because their paycheck wasn’t moving fast and far enough for them,” said Trump’s former Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer in an interview Tuesday night. “And Republicans ran out of runway on that.” |
| | + | |
| | + | The epicenter of the earthquake was Texas, where a turnout surge — especially among younger first-time Latino voters — helped Democrats sweep Texas’ statewide offices — the first time since 1994 they’ve won any at all. Republicans won only one of the five House seats they had gerrymandered... |

| | + | American Taxpayers Paying for Terror |
| | + | Time for Congress to pass the ‘No Tax Dollars for Terrorists Act’. |
| | + | November 4, 2026 by Aaron Shuster. |
| | + | |
| | + | “You made a deal with the Germans to bomb our own base?” |
| | + | “A contract is a contract!” |
| | + | —Catch-22 (1970), screenplay by Buck Henry, adapted from Joseph Heller’s novel. |
| | + | |
| | + | Who controls the aid after America pays for it? That question should come before every appropriation for territory dominated by a terrorist organization. Washington prefers to announce how much it has given. The regime controlling access, recipients and local operations has a different calculation: how much money and power can it extract? American generosity can become the raw material of an enemy’s survival. |
| | + | |
| | + | Joseph Heller understood the absurdity. His Milo Minderbinder contracted to bomb his own side and defended the transaction as business. Washington’s version invokes humanitarian necessity. The proclaimed purpose may be admirable. The consequences depend upon who controls what happens after the money leaves American hands. |
| | + | |
| | + | Congress has an opportunity to confront that contradiction through H.R. 260, the No Tax Dollars for Terrorists Act. Introduced by Representative Tim Burchett, the legislation passed the House in June 2025 and emerged from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee with amendments in early 2026. It deserves passage, reconciliation of the chambers’ differences, and the president’s signature. Its underlying principle should scarcely require legislation: Americans must not subsidize the forces that threaten them. |
| | + | [...] |
| | + | How did we reach the point where that principle needed spelling out? |
| | + | |
| | + | After the Taliban seized Afghanistan in August 2021, the United States continued financing humanitarian and development assistance through international organizations and nongovernmental partners. American officials authorized the expenditure. The Taliban held coercive power where the assistance arrived. A donor could specify the intended beneficiaries without controlling whether the regime allowed those people to receive it. |
| | + | |
| | + | The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction supplied an uncomfortable answer. Its May 2024 audit found that 38 implementing partners had paid at least $10.9 million in American-funded taxes, fees, duties and utilities to the Taliban-controlled government. Incomplete reporting meant the figure was likely only a fraction of the total. These were identified payments, not an estimate invented by opponents of foreign aid. |
| | + | |
| | + | SIGAR reported $3.83 billion in American humanitarian and development assistance between the Taliban takeover and the termination of most assistance in 2025. The $10.9 million in identified payments was one measurable benefit within that much larger system. The strategic question extends beyond money entering Taliban accounts: how much influence did the regime acquire over the expenditure of the rest? |
| | + | |
| | + | Who authorized such payments? Part of the answer is available in plain sight. In February 2022, the Biden administration’s Treasury Department issued General License 20. It maintained restrictions on transfers to the Taliban and Haqqani Network while permitting specified payments for taxes, fees, import duties, permits, licenses and utilities. Officials sought to facilitate economic activity and relief without lifting terrorism sanctions generally. |
| | + | |
| | + | The resulting imbroglio was hardly mysterious. Washington restricted the regime with one instrument while allowing certain revenue-producing transactions with another. Some payments were legally authorized. That makes the policy question more pressing: why were these concessions considered acceptable, how much did they yield, and what limits were actually enforced? A license establishes permission. It does not establish wisdom. |
| | + | |
| | + | SIGAR’s August 2025 study, A Broken Aid System, addressed precisely that problem. It found that the Taliban used regulatory authority, pressure and force to direct aid toward their preferred recipients. Control over which organizations could operate, interference with vendors and staffing, and extortion gave the regime leverage over delivery. These were mechanisms of power, extending well beyond an occasional stolen consignment. |
| | + | |
| | + | A guileful regime need not collect every dollar to benefit from billions in outside assistance. If donors cover civilian services, rulers can redirect their own resources. If rulers influence access to supplies, they can reward loyalty and penalize opposition. Control over distribution can strengthen a regime even when some assistance reaches genuinely needy people. An accounting confined to direct transfers misses this political return. |
| | + | |
| | + | The report also examined a culture of denial within the international aid community. This matters enormously. An unavoidable loss, candidly disclosed and rigorously contained, is one thing. A system that minimizes interference while continuing to seek public money presents a different problem. When does reassurance become dissimulation? Certainly an official cannot establish success simply by repeating the purpose printed on a grant. |
| | + | |
| | + | The machinery can reward continuation. Organizations require permission to operate, while each disruption threatens the next delivery. The regime understands these dependencies. If donors will not suspend a compromised arrangement, what incentive remains for the authorities to stop compromising it? |
| | + | |
| | + | Different actors can sustain this pernicious outcome for different reasons. A contractor protects an award; an agency protects a program; a ministry protects a policy. Responsibility disperses while the money continues moving. Who possesses both the authority and the willingness to stop it? |
| | + | |
| | + | The moral cost extends beyond the balance sheet. The Taliban sheltered al-Qaeda before September 11 and fought American forces for years afterward. American families buried their dead. Veterans returned with injuries that no appropriation could repair. To treat revenue flowing to that regime as an incidental administrative expense asks those families to accept a distinction the recipients have no reason to respect. |
| | + | |
| | + | What becomes of national interest when the taxpayer must finance both resistance to an enemy and arrangements that replenish its resources? Ordinary Americans are required to meet their obligations precisely. Their government should face an equally exacting test when spending their earnings. Compassion purchased with someone else’s money carries a duty to account for its consequences. Otherwise, the official enjoys the moral satisfaction while the taxpayer and intended beneficiary bear the loss. |
| | + | |
| | + | Afghan civilians, especially women and girls living under Taliban restrictions, have claims upon our compassion. Their suffering also exposes the absurdity of an arrangement that lets their rulers profit from efforts to relieve it. Why should the oppressor acquire revenue, influence or political credit because outsiders are trying to help the oppressed? |
| | + | |
| | + | The danger reaches beyond Afghanistan. In November 2024, federal prosecutors announced an indictment alleging that a Syrian aid official diverted more than $9 million in American-funded humanitarian assistance to armed groups, including the al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Nusrah Front. An indictment is an allegation, not a conviction. Nevertheless, the case illustrates the concrete conduct that investigators must pursue: money intended for civilians allegedly redirected to combatants, with the original beneficiaries deprived twice over. |
| | + | |
| | + | Gaza presents the same fundamental question about control. At a February 2025 congressional hearing, Middle East Forum executive director Gregg Roman cited $2.1 billion in American assistance since October 7. He testified that 90 percent of aid delivered through American agents reached Hamas-controlled areas and argued that the assistance underwrote Hamas’s survival until the ceasefire. His indictment concerned the strategic benefit to a U.S.-designated terrorist organization operating where aid was delivered. |
| | + | |
| | + | The territorial figure does not measure how much Hamas seized. It makes the next inquiry indispensable: who exercised power over access and delivery? Former USAID official Max Primorac testified that international organizations lobbied against vetting requirements. A May 2026 inspector-general audit identified vetting exemptions and information gaps. Congress must examine those warnings alongside specific evidence of interference. Aid involving the Palestinian Authority likewise requires scrutiny of its recipients and conditions. |
| | + | |
| | + | These cases involve different programs and legal circumstances. H.R. 260 specifically addresses Afghanistan and the Taliban. Its importance lies in forcing scrutiny of the channels through which assistance can benefit an enemy. |
| | + | |
| | + | What would the bill require? The Senate-reported version calls for identifying foreign countries and organizations providing assistance to the Taliban, examining their receipt of American assistance, and implementing a strategy to discourage such support. It also requires suspension of assistance to countries or organizations determined by the secretary of state to have assisted the Taliban. |
| | + | |
| | + | The legislation demands reports on cash assistance, currency exchanges and hawala transfers, the broker networks used to move money. It requires scrutiny of the Afghan Fund and safeguards against Taliban access. Repeated reporting over five years would make accountability an ongoing obligation. Crucially, its strategy must include support for Afghan women and girls without supporting their rulers. |
| | + | |
| | + | Such obligations will accomplish little if Congress accepts desultory oversight and familiar assurances. Legislators must demand usable accounts of transactions and recipients, examine discrepancies and require correction. Agencies should explain how they will remediate identified failures before another award repeats them. Reporting becomes valuable when someone acts upon what it reveals. |
| | + | |
| | + | Where investigators establish deliberate fraud or prohibited support, the response belongs in a courtroom. Where officials accepted a harmful but lawful arrangement, they must defend that decision publicly. Neither problem is resolved by announcing that the money was spent with good intentions. |
| | + | |
| | + | A July 2026 inspector-general summary states that American humanitarian and development assistance to Afghanistan stopped on April 4, 2025, while two education programs continued separately. President Trump’s administration deserves credit for stopping the broader flow. The next obligation is to prevent its reconstruction under arrangements that reproduce the same vulnerabilities. |
| | + | |
| | + | Why pass a bill after those cuts? Because an executive decision can be reversed. Programs can return under new descriptions, administrators or emergencies. Congress should establish obligations that survive a change of personnel. The Congressional Budget Office expects no immediate outlay savings from the proposed rescissions because most relevant contracts and grants have already been terminated. The argument for enactment rests on accountability and prevention, rather than an imaginary immediate windfall. |
| | + | |
| | + | Congress should finish H.R. 260 and insist upon answers. The decisive test of assistance is who can control it, exploit it and turn it into power. Americans should not be required to finance an enemy’s endurance because officials prefer to discuss their intentions. In Heller’s world, a contract excused bombing one’s own base. In ours, humanitarian language must never excuse sustaining those who would attack it. |
