In the United States, ''men'' were not permitted to wear topless bathing suits until, I think, the 1940s, but I don't want to go digging for references on this as I have an idea this section of the article may not last long. Horatio Greenough's 1840 statue of George Washington, with his upper half undraped, was controversial. the supreme court has stated that anywhere a man is permitted to go topless, a woman cannot be disallowed.
