The '''Battle of Tanagra''' (426 B.C.) was fought during the [[Second Peloponnesian War]] between the rival [[Greek]] [[city-states]] of [[Athens]] and [[Sparta]]. The battle was part of a two pronged Athenian offensive to try to crush [[Thebes]] and [[Boeotia]], allies of Sparta. Tanagra was the second part of the offensive. The Athenian general [[Nicias]] made a halfhearted invasion of Boetia, but retired back to [[Attica]] after an inconclusive victory.
