The '''Battle of Pylos''' in 425 B.C. was part of the [[Second Peloponnesian War]] between the [[Greek]] [[city states]] or [[Athens]] and [[Sparta]]. The Athenian general [[Demosthenes]], riding the wave of his victory in the [[Battle of Olpae]], established a fortified base at Pylos. The Spartans attacked by land, but were repulsed while Demosthenes was able to capture an entire Spartan fleet leaving a contingent of Spartan soldiers isolated on the island of Sphacteria.
