The '''Battle of Delium''' in 405 B.C. was part of the [[Second Peloponnesian War]] between the [[Greek]] [[city states]] of [[Athens]] and [[Sparta]] and their allies. It was near the very end of the war, although neither side knew it at that time.
The Spartan general [[Lysander]] put back in command after the drowning death of [[Callicratidas]] at the [[Battle of Arginusae]] struck the Athenian fleet while they were moored at night with most of the crews ashore. The Athenian fleet of nearly 200 vessels was completely destroyed. Most of the crews were then captured and slaughtered. It proved to be the pivital battle of what had been a long see-saw war as Athens was unable to recover.
