The '''Battle of Cunaxa''' was fought in 401 B.C. as part of a civil war in the [[Persian Empire]]. In that battle the Persian Emperor [[Artaxerxes II]] was opposed by [[Cyrus the satrap of Lydia]]. Artaxerxes had about 100,000 men. Although Cyrus had the upper hand on the right side of the battle, his death led to his forces fleeing except for a force of Greek [[mercanaries]] under [[Clearchus]] who then swept Artaxerxes' army from the field. Nevertheless, the rebel claimant had died and Artaxerxes was still Emperor. He invited the victorious Greek general and his senior officers to a feast, then treacherously killed them. This led to the infamous [[March of the 10,000]].
