The '''Fifth Syrian War''' was fought from 203 to 195 B.C. when [[Antiochus III]] conspired with [[Philip V]] of [[Macedon]] to strip the Ptolemaic Empire of most of its holdings due to the recent death of [[Ptolemy IV]] and the accession of the infant [[Ptolemy V]] to the throne. In [[Palestine]] and [[Syria]] Antiochus was successful with the crowning victory coming at the [[Battle of Panium]]. Philip was less succesful being repulsed by [[Pergamum]] and [[Rhodes]], both allies of the [[Egyptian]] Ptolemys and on sea he was defeated in the naval [[Battle of Chios]] in 201 B.C. He then became involved in the disasterous [[Second Macedonian War]] with [[Rome]] and was too busy to fight further.
