The '''United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland''' was the name of the UK from January 1801 to April 1927. The state was created from the merger of the [[Kingdom of Great Britain]] and the [[Kingdom of Ireland]].
In December 1922 Ireland was partitioned into [[Northern Ireland]], which remained within the union, and the [[Irish Free State]] (today the [[Republic of Ireland]]) which became independent. In 1927 the name of the state was officially changed to the [[United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland]] to reflect the partition of Ireland.
