The Rt. Hon. James Henry Scullin was the Prime Minister of Australia at the start of the Great Depression.
He became the Prime Minister upon his party winning a 29-seat majority in the House of Representatives, but failure to win control of the Senate meant that his government was unable to carry out much of its program.
His role as Prime Minister ended after losing a motion of no confidence, which led to the dissolution of Parliament and a new election.
Scullin was responsible for the appointment of Australia's first Australian-born Governor General, Sir Isaac Isaacs, the Chief Justice of the High Court, despite King George V preferring a member of the British nobility.
