He has consistently cut deals with Democrats, said he would consider running with John Kerry in 2004 and supported the freedom-limiting Mc-Cain Feingold bill. It was reported that the [[George W. Bush]] camp spread a rumor that McCain was the father of an illigimate black baby in 2000 which cut dramatically into his support. Although that little brouhaha happened, John and George remain good friends today.
